The stylish reader

They say a smile is always the best accessory for women (and we don't disagree!) And so are books (and we don’t disagree!) But what’s a little black dress without a string of pearls, or a clutch, or heels, or a tiara, or all of the above?

Many of us have reading rituals, right? A book, a place, a time, all become routine, familiar and comfortable. For book lovers? To add to our reading experience, some of us bring what I like to classify as “accessories for readers.’’

Mine include a bookmark, a drink and a pillow. I took another dip into some social media platforms and discussion boards, and once again, the reading community did not disappoint!

Most readers seem to agree they do have “things” they like to have with them, on the go, or especially while reading. Bookmarks, reading glasses, blankets, pens, chapstick or gum were all given examples! (Check out these cool Tote Bags for book lovers from Type Books!)

I've included my must-have accessories for readers — minus the tiara! (Rebecca was very disappointed!)

Some may think a bookmark is boring — I, however, think the opposite. Some readers are extremely invested in what type of bookmark they use: The size, the colour, a picture or a saying, the material — these are all things that matter. Having the bookmark with you matters too. (How many times have you tried to memorize the chapter or page number you’re on, unsuccessfully?)

Bookmarks are like little souvenirs in our minds, remembering when or where we got them, or who bought them for us. The oldest bookmark I have is also the first one I ever received over 35 years ago. (Check out this awesome and artistic modern bookmark to add some colour and beauty to your books!)

Reading glasses were essentially comparable, aside from the fact they are needed to be able to, um, see the words! But…just because they are “mandatory” doesn’t mean they have to be boring. Reading glasses are a perfect example of how we can incorporate your own unique style when enjoying a book: distinct shapes and colours open up a world of possibilities.

Plus, it’s very rare to have just one pair! Reading glasses are as guilty as the missing sock — they disappear constantly, so we have to have a few around. (Rebecca says she has at least 11 pairs in various rooms in her house until they eventually inevitably all get lost. She shares, “I think the main reason I go to pharmacies is not to pick up medicines, but to buy reading glasses! I know I really need prescription glasses, at this point, but honestly? I know I’ll lose them within an hour, even if they were hanging by a chain around my neck!”)

(I suggest she buy this four-pack of polka-dot reading glasses that are super cute!)

Many readers say “drinks and refreshments” are important too. When one is enjoying or is immersed in a good book, let’s say on a porch on a beautiful summer’s day, one does not want to move to get a drink when one is parched. And it goes beyond that — a favourite drink is also “comfort.” A hot drink, glass of wine, or whatever wets your whistle, adds to the enjoyment and relaxation of the moment. Check out Premium calming Camomile tea and Tea & Coffee. And these Mugs!

Sometimes, when I read thrillers, my throat gets dry from fear, and tea always soothes that.

All the above are important! But the answers that came in like a landslide? Well, they are all cute and furry!

Pets are the most essential reading accessory for people who have them, according to my survey! My daughter’s cat likes to climb on my chest and neck when I’m reading. Let’s just say, I prefer she sits on my lap!

So, so many readers mentioned their pets — some with adorable pictures — and how important it was for them for their animals to be there when they’re reading. This integral reading “furry partner” usually has a habit of sitting in a specified location and for a certain amount of time. (Check out these adorable plaid dog pyjamas! Your furry friends should be comfy too.)

Having a moment or more to read is a pleasure that is as comforting and comfortable as you make it. And with that? Here are some links to some of my favourite items to accessorize my reading time, whether you're reading at the cottage, in the bath, in bed, at a park, or on the beach! (I even found some cheap tiaras for Rebecca while she reads here!)
